What is it?
A dual-sport ride is a motorcycle event that utilizes a mixture of public roads, paved and unpaved, as well as off-road trails and tracks that may be on private property. Usage of all the sections of the route are provided by permits from applicable municipalities and permission of private landowners. The planned route for this event is at least 120 miles, although adverse weather may require route adjustments on the day of the event. We're adjusting the course this year...our target is to have roughly 10% of the route on paved roads and 10% on gravel roads – the remainder is on varying terrain that includes fire roads, 2-track paths, dirt trails, and single-track sections that offer more difficulty to the rider – some may be designated as "Hero" sections which can be bypassed for riders on bigger machines that are not suitable for such trails, or if the rider just isn’t interested in riding that section. Based on feedback from the 2016 event, we are going to include more pure off-road mileage this year!
Note that a dual-sport ride is purely recreational – this is not a competitive event…no one is going to be tracking times or “keeping score” or anything like that. The whole point of the event is just to have a good time on your dual-sport bike, riding on a course that normally you wouldn’t have access to.
Motorcycles must be properly licensed and legal for operation on public roads. Headlights, taillights, brake lights, etc. all in working order. All machines are required to meet a 96db exhaust sound limit as well.
The event will begin at 8:00AM, and end at 6:00PM. Once the clock strikes six, all private lands are closed and you will be required to stick to public roads thereafter. Lunch will be provided mid-day, with dinner following the event.
The event is sanctioned in districts 16 and 23 of the American Motorcyclist Association – AMA membership is required. Click here to join the AMA. If you're not already an AMA member, you can join at rider check-in and/or buy a one-day AMA pass for $20.
A portion of the proceeds will be donated to area community and service organizations – in the past, VSMC has donated to groups like the Boy Scouts, EMT service, local veteran groups, and local high school football programs.
What’s included for participants?
All participants will receive:
- A limited-edition event t-shirt
- A paper roll-chart and/or GPS info
- Lunch (provided about halfway through the day)
- On-site camping at the Pierce County Fairgrounds, which is “base camp” for the event
- There are bathrooms and showers available at the fairgrounds!
- There's also a dump station available.
Note: based on feedback from last year, we are adjusting the meals so that the "good" meal is provided for dinner, and the lunch will be a little lighter then the steak lunch last year.
Where is this happening?
Base camp for the event is the Pierce County Fairgrounds in Ellsworth, WI. Participant check-in and the event start and finish will be at the fairgrounds. We have the Seyforth building reserved for our use...and it's air conditioned just in case you need to cool off from the summer sun for a while!
